Yellow sapphire, known in India as Pukhraj, is a golden-yellow gemstone valued for its bright colour and its place in Vedic astrology, where it is linked with Jupiter (Guru). It is one of the hardest natural gemstones, which makes it a practical choice for a ring worn every day.
Yellow sapphire is a variety of corundum, the same mineral as blue sapphire and ruby. Traces of iron give it a colour that ranges from pale lemon to deep golden yellow.
Many yellow sapphires are heated after mining to improve their colour, which is a common and accepted practice when it is disclosed. Unheated stones are rarer and usually cost more. Yellow topaz, citrine and glass can look similar but are different materials.
In Vedic astrology, Pukhraj is the gemstone of Jupiter, the planet traditionally linked with wisdom, learning, family and good fortune. It is one of the nine Navaratna stones, and by custom it is set in gold and worn on the index finger, often worn for the first time on a Thursday.
These associations come from tradition and belief and are not scientifically proven. Wearing Pukhraj does not guarantee any result in health, finances, career or marriage.

Gemstone advice in Vedic astrology depends on your birth chart. You can talk to astrologers on a call to ask about Jupiter's position in your chart and the weight they suggest.

Yes. Pukhraj is the Hindi name for yellow sapphire. Yellow topaz and citrine are sometimes sold as Pukhraj, but they are different gemstones.
The most reliable way is a report from an independent gem laboratory. Home tests are not dependable, because glass, topaz and lab-made sapphire can look very similar.
Heated stones have been warmed after mining to improve colour. Both are natural sapphire, but unheated stones are rarer and usually cost more.
There is no fixed rule. An astrologer suggests a weight based on your birth chart. Ask for the weight in carats too, since ratti conversions differ.
By tradition it is worn on the index finger of the working hand, set in gold. Customs vary, so follow your astrologer's advice.
Yes. Sapphire is very hard and resists scratches, so it suits rings worn every day.
